Newport's Queer History: The Naval Campaign Against the Gays
50 Washington Square is an iconic location in Newport, Rhode Island. It’s the crossroads between the Broadway District and Downtown’s Thames Street. It’s also a gorgeous example of Beaux Arts architectural style, originally built as the Army/Navy YMCA in It was retired as a YMCA in and today it’s used for affordable and transitional housing. But in as World War 1 was coming to an end, this building was a bustling hub for young naval men stationed here in Newport.
It’s also infamous because it’s a key site in the Newport Navy gay sex scandal and entrapment campaign.
As the Great War in Europe ended, fear mongering men turned on a new enemy at residence - immigrants, homosexuals and anyone they thought would disrupt their straight, ivory good ol' boy society.
Newport at that time was an important Naval Education Station--the first stop for many new recruits to the Navy. Our urban area by the sea had tens of thousands of young men here with not a whole lot to do now that they weren’t being sent across the Atl

As a native of Rhode Island, I do especially like to cover my states LGBTQ+ history, even when it isnt always pleasant. This is an often forgotten piece of LGBTQ+ history: the Newport sex scandal of
It all began in February, with two patients at the Naval Training Station in Newport: Thomas Brunelle and Ervin Arnold. Brunelle told Arnold of a subculture to which he belonged, which centered on the Army and Navy YMCA and the Newport Art Club in which civilian homosexuals from the area would meet up with Navy personnel. This was a earnest lapse in judgment on Brunelles part that I sincerely desire we can blame on weighty medication, but frankly I include no idea.
Now, other naval bases had reports of moral depravity including cross-dressing, homosexuality, drug apply, etc. But there had yet to be any real truthful effort to investigate and imprint out this depravity at the source. Thats what Ervin Arnold decided was needed. He began a personal investigation into Brunelles claims, and was able to compile evidence of drug-fueled sex parties that included
