Buddies review: the imaginative gay Aids drama is still one of the best
Originally released in , now restored in 2K and receiving a theatrical rerelease, Buddies is the first feature production to have depicted the Aids crisis. Directed by Arthur J Bressan Jr, who divided his professional life between making gay porn and creating documentaries and dramas about gay men, it’s an intimate two-hander about the bond between Robert (Geoff Edholm), an Aids patient, and David (David Schachter), his volunteer companion, or ‘buddy’. Bressan Jr himself died from an Aids-related illness two years after the film was released.
