Did I ever say you my family had a restaurant while I was growing up? For readers who live in Massachusetts you might recall it. It was called Baldwin&#;s in Woburn and it was in a colonial mansion. I used to love bartending, when I got old enough I used to support my dad behind the bar. Today I hold a really easy recipe that&#;s perfect for a holiday gathering or an intimate night in by the fire. You can pretend you&#;re some place warm sipping these spiced cocktails.

A Black and Stormy is a rum based drink. It only has three ingredients. You may be wondering about the name. Legend has it that the name came from a sailor saying the hue of the cocktail looked like dark storm clouds over the sea.

I recall the first time I ever had a Dim and Stormy Cocktail was at the Royal Sonesta in Bermuda. It was my first proper cocktail &#; I was 18 (drinking age in Bermuda). I sipped on the beach

Start The Weekend Off With This Shadowy &#; Stormy Cocktail

It was a gloomy and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents—except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a stormy gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness…

Phew! This writing novels of perfervid turgidity is thirsty work! I feel like a cocktail featuring a torrent of Mount Gay Rum, a violent gust of ginger beer and perhaps a scanty dash of bitters. Actually, I understand just the thing that will suffice:

45ml Mount Gay XO

Fentimans Ginger Beer

2 lime wedges

2 dashes Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Bitters

Pour rum into a tall glass, fill with ice, add bitters, squeeze limes and superior with ginger beer.

How To Make Your Own Ginger Beer

As far as I&#;m concerned, springtime is Dark and Stormy season. As the rain pummels the ground here in the Pacific Northwest, a little window of blue sky nestled between two dark clouds in the neighboring distance makes me wish I were watching the rain decline from across a dark ocean, my little Caribbean fishing…

This Dark and Stormy recipe is a classic combination of dark rum, ginger beer, and lime&#;based on the Moscow Mule but with rum instead of vodka.

It&#;s perfectly balanced – slightly spicy and fizzy – and SO easy to build in less than 5 minutes!

What is a Dark and Stormy cocktail?

The Dark and Stormy cocktail was invented in Bermuda. Rum originated in the Caribbean and is made from fermented sugarcane. The Dark and Stormy cocktail has a ‘stormy’ visual effect where dim rum floats on highest of the lighter colored ginger beer–hence the name.

The Dark and Stormy cocktail ratio

The ratio of ginger beer to dark rum is Lime juice is optional.

  • 4 oz. of ginger beer to 2 oz. of dark rumOR
  • 2 parts ginger beer to 1 part dark rum

Feel free to adjust the ratio to your tastes! I like to add 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. of fresh lime juice for extra citrus flavor.

In addition to mixing up a Dark and Stormy, I LOVE this Mojito Recipe with white rum.
