Up until depressingly recently, all comic book characters were straight. Sure, there contain been rumors about various characters for decades, but these swells of speculation never ventured farther than the imaginations of the readers, or perhaps fan fiction published in fanzines. This homogeneous straightness presents two problems: First of all, it's just plain boring. Who wants to read about the same types of characters all the time? And second, queer fans often find it tough to be constantly bombarded with straight character after straight character for years on end. If superheroes are for everyone, shouldn't they represent everyone as well?
